Remembering September 11th . . .

On September 11th, 2001, I was seven months pregnant with my son Brendan.  I remember walking my two older sons to school that day, looking up at the sky and thinking it was one of the most beautiful late summer mornings I had ever seen.  The sky was a brilliant shade of blue and there was not a cloud to be seen.  I walked back up the path and into the house and turned on the television to see what was going on in the world while I ate some breakfast.  My local news channel was showing a video of a plane crashing into one of the Twin Towers. This was the first glimpse I got of what would turn out to be one of the saddest days in American history.  I called my neighbor whose husband was a police officer in the city to see if she knew anything about what was going on.  As I sat on the stairs leading up to the second floor, staring at the television and talking on the phone I watched as another plane slammed into another tower.  At first I thought it was just another video of the first plane until I heard the news reporters and my friend screaming that it was another plane.

In all honesty, it didn't even occur to me at first that there were people in the building and emergency services workers there as well.  I think I was just trying to wrap my brain around what I had just seen.  Something that was taking place just 20 miles from where I live.

The photo above is a very special one to so many people.  The man on the left is my uncle Harry.  He was attending a funeral that day and wasn't there when the towers fell but when he found out what had happened he drove there immediately and was down "on the pile" looking for survivors for weeks.  My uncle was a member of FDNY for more than 35 years.  One of the people he was looking for was the young man on the right.  His name was Welles Crowther.  You may have heard of him as "The Man in the Red Bandanna."  If you haven't, you can read about him here .  He is a true hero in every sense of the word and I was blessed to have known him from the time he was a young boy.  If you look at the background of the photo, you can see the Twin Towers.  Welles worked in Tower 2 and was also a volunteer firefighter in our home town.  Helping people was in his blood.  My uncle was very close with Welles' parents and would stop by their house on his way home from Ground Zero and give them an update at the end of every shift.  Welles' body was eventually found in the lobby of Tower 2 with many other members of FDNY where they had set up a central command station.  My uncle Harry passed five years ago due to 9/11 related health complications.  His lungs were ruined by all of the dust and everything else that they were breathing in all of those months.  He is just one of many people who have succumbed to 9/11 related diseases.

Plaques dedicated to my uncle Harry and Welles outside of the fire house in Upper Nyack, NY where they both volunteered.
The Freedom Tower while it was still being built.

A couple of years ago we visited the 9/11 Memorial and the Freedom Tower while it was still under construction.  From the time you step off of the subway and walk up the stairs to its location you can sense that it is a sacred place.  The air seems different, the sky seems different and people seem different.  Everyone that visits there has there own personal reason for taking the journey there and whether or not you knew someone that died that day doesn't matter.  It will still touch you to your soul.

I was pregnant with this guy on 9/11/01.  : )

It has been 14 years and the sadness still sits right up at the surface on this day and so many other days.  When I see Welles' parents and sisters and my aunt and cousins I still could cry a river for them all.  When I see family members reading off the names on the television every September 11th I want to give them each a hug.  Name upon name.  Face upon face.  All of them, innocent victims of a senseless tragedy.

Lest we forget.

Many blessings ~ Wendy

A Day in NYC . . .

Last week, we ventured into Manhattan to visit a life-long friend who was in the hospital for a few days after having back surgery.  It was a gorgeous day and I haven't walked around Manhattan in such a long time.  It truly is a picture taker's dream!!!

Going over the George Washington Bridge.
I didn't notice the plane when I took this shot.  Kinda cool.  : )

This is a giant billboard along the Westside Highway.  This company always has the best ad campaigns!!

Normally, when we go anywhere I drive.  I'm one of those people who loves to drive.  Plus, I have a tendency to get car sickness if I'm a passenger.  I've had it since I was a kid and unfortunately never grew out of it.  : (    But I wanted to take pics and that's pretty much impossible (and probably illegal!!) to do while driving so my husband took over.  He works in Manhattan and knows it like the back of his hand.

A couple of photos that I took from the passenger seat:

This was a beautiful window display that we passed.  The glare from the scaffolding on the building across the street was pretty bad but I thought the colors were so beautiful that I couldn't resist.
Welcome to NYC!!!  LOL!!!  Another thing that I didn't notice when I took the photo was a not so appropriate expletive.  Thankfully, I figured out how to make it more reader friendly!!!  : )

Springtime in Manhattan!!!!!

We had the perfect day.  We found a parking spot right next to my husband's office building which, he said, is unheard of at that time of the day.  We made a pit stop to see his office since I'd never been there before and, of course, he wanted to show off his daughter.  : )  We got a bite to eat at this little hole in the wall eatery that served one of the best burgers I've had in years.  Then we walked to the hospital to see my friend, Stacey.  We were all set to have Jim stay in the lobby with Megan because we thought for sure they wouldn't let any kids up on the floors but, unbeknownst to us, it was BRING YOUR CHILD TO WORK DAY!!!  Woohoo!!!!  There were kids walking all around and the lady at the reception desk didn't even bat an eyelash!!!  Don't you just love when things work out like that??  That's the Universe working its magic!!!  : )

The view from Stacey's hospital room.  That's the Empire State Building in case you weren't sure.  We kinda got in trouble for opening the window to take this photo.  We didn't know we weren't supposed to open the window.  Honestly!!!!!  : )

There was a wonderful little park right next to the hospital and it was filled with kids and their nannies (again, welcome to New York!!) enjoying the beautiful day.

Trying to get a closer look at the flowers.

Megan loves to be outdoors and loves to be with nature.  She did a lot of walking that day.  We brought her stroller with us but she walked most of the time.  She was a happy girl!!!!

You can't do a post about NYC and not include a photo of a pigeon!!!!  : )

Tomorrow I'm going to post some photos I took of the absolutely gorgeous architecture near the Gramercy Park area of Manhattan which is where we were most of the day.  I promise you won't be disappointed!!  : )

Visiting the 9/11 Memorial . . .

The last month has been such a whirlwind of activity around here.  I've really been neglecting my blogging (AND my housework, AND my laundry!!) and want to make it a point to get back into it.  Photos have been backing up on my camera and I wanted to share some.

The Freedom Tower in Manhattan.

The names of the victims of 9/11.

A couple of weeks ago, we took a trip into Manhattan for the day.  My mother and father-in-law were here  from Tennessee for the week.  We visited the 9/11 Memorial for the first time since it has opened.  Needless to say, a very emotional yet beautiful and peaceful place to be.  This was the first time I have been to the area where the towers used to stand since 9/11 and I have to say that as soon as you come up from the subway you can feel a complete shift in energy from the rest of the city.  If you've ever been to Manhattan, or any of the boroughs for that matter, it's all about hustle and bustle.  People coming and going at a very rapid pace.  That's just how New Yorkers roll, I guess.  But Ground Zero is different.  Peaceful for the most part.

9/11 Memorial.

A reflection on the side of a building at Ground Zero.

Brendan reading names of some of the victims.  This was so beautifully done.  The names are carved in so deeply.  Absolutely beautiful.
Our friend, Welles Remy Crowther, was one of the victims of 9/11.  He died a true hero.  You can learn about him here .

My wonderful mother and father-in-law.

After visiting the memorial, we went to the world famous Katz' Delicatessen for lunch.  If you've never been to Katz' and you love pastrami on rye, you must add it to your list of places to visit while in NYC!!!!  TO DIE FOR!!!!!!! We are all now officially ruined for all other pastrami sandwiches!!  : )

Have a wonderful weekend!!  We're turning our clocks back one hour tonight.  Usually I love to do this but this year I'm kind of going to miss the light.  I was looking out my front door this morning.  There is an over abundance of color right now.  The brilliantly blue autumn sky, the reds, yellows and oranges of autumn foliage and the still green grass all look so beautiful.  It's so hard to believe that in just a few short weeks it will be gone.  I'm definitely feeling that nesting feeling that I so love so I guess I'll just grin and bear the shorter days.  : )

Photos on a {mostly} Wordless Wednesday . . .

A photo of Lady Liberty that I took while on a cruise around Manhattan with my son's fifth grade class.

Keeping a watchful eye over the harbor.

The Brooklyn Bridge.

This is the Freedom Tower that is being built as a result of the loss of the Twin Towers.  Being a New Yorker, I can't begin to tell you the emotion we all felt as we looked at this and all that it represents.  God bless America!!
The very top of the freedom tower.
The Freedom Tower still under construction.

Cruisin' 'round Manhattan . . .

My youngest son, Brendan, is about to graduate from elementary school in a couple of weeks.  His class has been blessed with a wonderful group of moms that have done a tremendous job with fundraising this year and, because of this, his class was able to take a cruise around Manhattan yesterday free of charge to the kids and a decent cost for any parents that wanted to join in the festivities.

Our boat.

I was more than a little nervous about going on the cruise due to fear of sea sickness (I get car sick when I'm in the backseat, air sick on take-offs and landings, can't go on any rides that spin and feel horrible if I'm on a boat that is rocking too much!!) but I put my trusty bracelets on that work on pressure points on the inside of your wrists and I'm happy to say I didn't have a single problem, thankfully.  : )

Can you tell Brendan was having a great time??!!??  : )
Brendan and a few of his friends.
Dancing to the "YMCA!!"
After lunch and checking out the upper deck that gave you the most incredible views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty, the kids were back inside for some serious dancing and, let me tell you, some of those kids can really move!!!  LOL!!!

The Empire State Building.

I loved the reflection on the side of this building.

This is the Brooklyn Bridge.  I didn't notice the worker until I edited this photo.  Can you spot him??

South Street Seaport.
Needless to say, this cruise was a photographer's dream and I took full advantage of all of the incredible photo opps!!!  I'll share lots more photos the next time!!  : )
